HELSTON
SCHOOL JAZZ ORCHESTRA
MUSICAL DIRECTOR
CLIVE KING
Clive King was born in Truro in 1968. He attended Mullion school from 1980 - 1985. From Mullion he went to Chethams School of Music and following his graduation joined the RAF Central Band (1987 - 2004) where he played in the Wind Band, the Big Band, the Jazz 5 Piece, the Brass Quintet and the fanfare trumpets.
Clive's tour of duty included East to West USA, Hong Kong, the Gulf and most of Europe. His extensive performing career includes playing for the changing of the guard at Buckingham Palace, the Edinburgh Tattoo and at the Cenotaph, to the slightly less formal playing at Ronnie Scotts with the Squadronnaires Big Band (the first military band to play there).
Clive has played on 6 RAF albums, one of which was recorded 'across the road' at the famous Abbey Road Studios.
Away from the RAF he has played with Hong Kong Phil, the BBC Big Band, the BBC Concert Orchestra and the Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, has taught brass at the Egerton Rothay School in Berkhamstead from 2000 until 2004, and worked for the RAF recruitment team from 2004 until 2006.
Clive's experiences as a medic during the first Gulf war will stand him in good stead for coping with the staff room at Helston College music department!
Clive has taken over the baton (literally) and has already had a massive impact on the band, leading them to a silver medal at the National Band Contest Finals at Gateshead in the spring of 2007.
Clive has revamped the bands' repetoire and introduced a variety of new charts which include a varied range of vocal numbers and specialist solos for individual members. He is also developing the improvisation skills of the band in special workshops each week. This fresh approach has been well received by audiences throughout a successful summer of gigging in the Southwest.
Long live the King! (Clive, that is)
