ABOUT
HELSTON SCHOOL & ITS MUSIC
Helston
School is a mixed 11-19 comprehensive school with more
than 90 teaching staff and 1650 pupils situated in the
far West of the County of Cornwall. We draw our pupils
from the town of Helston and the surrounding rural area
and work closely with about 20 Feeder Primary Schools.
The presence of the Royal Naval Air Stations at Culdrose
means that the population of Helston has a varied admixture
of families from all over the country.
The
School and Community College is large and flourishing
and students follow a wide range of courses, including
GCSEs, GNVQs at Intermediate and Advanced Level, AS Levels
and A2 Levels. Years 7—11 are located on the main
school site with the Community College on its own dedicated
Post-16 Site.
Music
flourishes throughout the whole school. The highly successful
music department is housed in a new £1,000,000 purpose
built facility on the College Site, but used by all age
groups and the wider community.
As
well as offering peripatetic music teaching of a multitude
of musical instruments, students from the entire age range
are encouraged to join in any of the following extra-curricular
musical activities:
Senior
Mixed Choir Percussion Ensemble
Rock Ensembles Guitar Ensemble
Senior Girls Choir Brass Band
Flute/Clarinet Ensembles Sax Ensemble
Grade V Theory Class Junior Mixed Choir
Windband String Ensemble
Helston School Jazz Orchestras
Sell-out
Christmas Concerts and Summer Concerts are held every
year involving hundreds of students. In 1999 the inaugural
“Young Performer of the Year” competition
(sponsored by the Rotary Club) was held for both Primary
School and Helston School and College musicians and proved
so successful that it has become a regular bi-annual event.
